2027 Symposium

Youngstown State University seeks propoals for BLACK MONDAY a 50th anniversary symposium to be held September 13, 2027 at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor, Youngstown, Ohio.

On “Black Monday,” September 19, 1977, Youngstown’s largest steel mill closed without warning. Five thousand workers lost their jobs and the city was forever changed. From Youngstown, the “Rust Belt” was born. Now, 50 years later, it is time for remembrance and reflection on this critical moment in Midwestern history.

This symposium seeks to bring together a variety of scholars whose work investigates themes related to deindustrialization and its ongoing impacts on American life. Proposals from all eras and fields relative to the theme are welcome. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

labor
the working class
technology
big business
environmental impacts
economic transition
politics, populism, and realignment
transnational and comparative history

public health
social services
urban renewal
memory and commemoration
music, photography, literature, and media
industrial heritage
historic preservation
renewal and revitalization

Proceedings will be considered for publication with Ohio Valley History Journal.

We invite proposals for individual papers, panels, and roundtables; submitted no later than March 31, 2027. For more information and to submit a proposal, please email alfluker@ysu.edu
